We here at Showit are constantly striving to provide the best, and easiest to use, website builder for photographers and creatives.
For those who just want the summary of this article, here is the TLDR:
Showit began over 10 years ago with a goal to build the most amazing platform for photographers to have creative freedom over their unique website. Without needing to know a single line of code. Over the years of development we created a platform for amazingly cool websites with animations and interactivity. Unfortunately, the platform we chose (Flash) which was the best at the time, has now been replaced by HTML 5. We adapted Showit to display the design of a site without the full experience and then introduced a custom mobile website builder. Eventually we realized that to fully take advantage of the way the web was going that we would need to start over. So we built Showit 5 and launched that in March of last year.
Over the last year we have seen massive adoption and thousands of sites are now built on Showit 5. The feedback from users who have switched love the power of a scrolling site with custom desktop and mobile designs. The sites are built completely in HTML 5 for transitions, animations, and galleries. We launched a design market which has over 100 free and premium designs to start from. They are all customizable and ready to build a unique site that is perfect for you and your business. Showit 5 also includes an option to host a WordPress blog and the power to design a custom WordPress theme. All with the amazing drag and drop builder. You still do not need to know code.
The original Showit website builder based on Flash has been renamed to Showit Desktop . It continues to work as an installed application. However, because we see the features of Showit 5 as the future of the web, we are announcing that we will no longer allow new Showit Desktop accounts or subscriptions to be created. We are also encouraging Desktop users to move to Showit 5 in 2017. If you have more questions, this FAQ outlines the features of Showit Desktop without Flash and how that can impact your site. When Showit Desktop sites are displayed without Flash, the most obvious difference will be that the site doesn’t automatically stretch to fill the browser window. Also certain galleries or scrolling text boxes will require clicks to open.
A current Showit Desktop subscription covers the top tier of a Showit 5 site. So you can begin building your new site with Showit 5, while maintaining your current site. Due to the large difference in technology between Flash and HTML, an automatic migration isn’t possible. We will continue to host and maintain Showit Desktop, so that users who don’t switch over can keep their site and continue to make updates. Just be aware that Showit Desktop sites will likely display as the HTML counterpart in the near future (or already have) unless a visitor chooses to enable Flash for the site.
We put together this guide for some simple things to keep your Showit Desktop site looking good for browsers without Flash while you transition to Showit 5. In addition, Showit Designers have already built hundreds of sites that were moved from Showit Desktop to Showit 5 and our customer support pros are available to help answer questions and make the transition as smooth as possible.
Thank you for your support and allowing us to continue to make Showit the best website builder for photographers and creatives.
