Connecting in the Community: Finding your Place in a Busy World

We live in a rapidly changing world.

We log into Facebook, and there are 55 new notifications to look at. Our newsfeeds are totally slammed with links to the latest cute dog video, or a friend's funny kid, or a heartbreaking news story. In an effort to focus, we narrow things down: Facebook groups, the “small study group of friends” for your business.

It can be overwhelming as a new member of this community, and I just wanted to give you some encouragement. I've been a member of Showiteers since 2008, and in that time I've noticed a few things. I'd like to share a little bit of that insight with you, so pull up a chair, grab a coffee & some Oreos like I just did, and let's chat.

It gets better, I promise. Maybe you've asked a question, and in the chaos of several thousand photographers asking their questions & chatting about gear, it got missed. We really, REALLY, want to meet you and help you. I'm sorry you felt overlooked. Please know that we are so happy that you are here, and that you've chosen to join our crazy family. [pullquote] Please know that we are so happy that you are here, and that you've chosen to join our crazy family.[/pullquote] There are times when I've seen a posted question, wanted time to really think about my answer, and then life happens and I forget to go back to that post. The post gets buried. In a few days the original poster bumps the post, and I feel awful as I realize I dropped the ball. I missed it. I take responsibility for that, and I apologize. You are important, and I care about your questions. Please don't stop, or give up easily.

One of the main reasons this site was started is to have a place where answers don't move. We want you to be able to come to and get to the bottom of those questions you have. The Facebook community is amazing but it moves SO FAST. Jump in- ask again. Bump your post. Message one of us directly and ask. We are here to help you get your answers, or to point you in the direction of someone who can help. We've all  been there at the beginning, with unlimited questions and limited resources. Let us help you. We don't bite, I promise.

Did you know that there is no one like you anywhere in the entire universe? That's pretty amazing when you think about it. There are so many unique and amazing things that ONLY YOU can bring to the table, and we want to know those things. Help us get to know you, and don't be shy. Comment on posts, show us an Instagram of your hairless felines, tell us about how you can juggle with your feet- whatever your thing is. There's bound to be people who will resonate with your likes and interests, and will want to know more about you.

One of the best ways to feel like a part of something bigger than yourself is to get involved. There are so many Showiteer hangouts and meet ups that happen around the world, and we would love to see your face at one of them. Going on a trip? Find out if there are Showiteers in your area, by posting up in the Facebook Group or by checking the Showiteer map.

At WPPI in Vegas this February, I roomed with some gorgeous Showiteer ladies. While on vacation in Palm Springs at the beginning of May, I hired a Showiteer to take family portraits of my family, and I just had the opportunity to hang out with some amazing Showiteers in Phoenix for the launch of this site. This community is full of people who are more than just profile pictures- they will be my friends for LIFE.

We are also looking for guest writers and contributors for We would love to hear from you in your area of expertise, be it an article about how to find the world's most comfortable shoes for shooting weddings, or how to rig up an off camera flash setup that will blow minds without blowing out the highlights. If this is something you're interested in,  you can click Become a Contributor and we will get you set up to share your knowledge with the rest of us.

The more you give, the more you will get out of this thing called Showiteers. Thanks for the coffee date! I look forward to connecting with you soon. <3
