Friday Five: The Style Edition

September 9, 2016

Happy Friday friends! You may or may not be aware, but something is happening right now that will affect all of us in the very near future. That's right- New York Fashion Week. Whether you care about fashion or not, this still affects you, because you HAVE TO WEAR CLOTHES. You must. It's an absolute requirement to be a productive part of society, and even just to be outside without getting arrested. For those who think they are above the materialism and flakeyness of fashion, I am reminded of the mesmerizing monologue by the phenomenal Meryl Streep in my favorite movie from 2006- The Devil Wears Prada:

‘This… stuff'? Oh. OK. I see. You think this has nothing to do with you. You go to your closet and you select… I don't know… that lumpy blue sweater, for instance because you're trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what you put on your back. But what you don't know is that that sweater is not just blue, it's not turquoise. It's not lapis. It's actually cerulean. And you're also blithely unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar de la Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. And then I think it was Yves Saint Laurent… wasn't it who showed cerulean military jackets? I think we need a jacket here. And then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of eight different designers. And then it filtered down through the department stores and then trickled on down into some tragic Casual Corner where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs and it's sort of comical how you think that you've made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact, you're wearing the sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room from a pile of stuff. -Miranda Priestly

Oh that's good stuff right there.

Fashion is not something you need to be obsessed with (I am personally, just a tiny bit…), but it's something you should be aware of. Because as much as it sucks, people judge you when they see you. And you judge people in the same way. It doesn't mean it's a judgement that lasts, but you get an idea of someone by the way they dress. Like if you see someone who is always wearing workout gear- you would think that they are a gym rat, or a stay at home mom. First impressions. It's a real thing. If you make a bad first impression, it doesn't mean you can't change a person's mind, it just means you have to change someone's mind. Instead, put your best foot forward, and if people's first impression of you is a great one, then that is great, cause you never know when you might run into a future client, boss, or collaborative partner.

Today's post is to help you look at your closet and assess things that you have, make sure you love them, and add a few pieces that will accentuate what you already have. If you know me, I wear jeans and t-shirts very often. But my jeans are usually white, or gray, or they're distressed. And sometimes I half tuck in my shirt. Mix things up! There are so many easy ways to have a wardrobe that works for you, and I promise you don't have to spend a ton of money to look stylish. All of these pieces are available for a lot of money at Nordstroms, or not a lot of money at Target, or H&M. So, here are five easy and fashionable things you can add to your wardrobe to help you look more put-together:

1. Jackets. You just need to buy one amazing jacket and it will transform all of your outfits. This season, military jackets, or even just military green colored jackets are on and along the runways. Bombers are also making a comeback in a major way. You can find them anywhere and at a variety of price points. And some have flowers embroidered onto them. Be still my heart.

2.Booties. Living in Arizona I don't get to wear jackets very often, but booties are becoming an all-year possible fashion trend. I cannot even tell you how much I love booties! I used to have to wait until the end of November for it to be cold enough to wear my tall boots. If I wore them too early, when it was too hot, I would be at serious risk of suffering from dehydration from leg and foot sweat. But enter the magical and beautiful bootie! Warm enough for winter, especially with some nice thick socks, but especially with all the cute cut-out bootie options, cool enough to wear during the summer too. 3. Sneakers. For the love of all things comfortable and wonderful. Sneakers are the best thing that ever happened to the world of fashion. I love a nice high heel, but with four kids, I hardly ever wear them. Sneakers are my opportunity to be stylish, and able to run after my kid who may be running after the ice cream truck without breaking my ankles. Imagine the possibilities of wearing these to your family mini-sessions! Can you say running action shots? The beautiful thing about adding sneakers to your wardrobe is that it is so intentional. How often are you about to run out of the house to meet a client, or friends, and you just put on your favorite pair of flip flops and call it good? Putting on sneakers instead takes some forethought. You need to find those little no-show socks. And they are so little, you really have to dig through your sock drawer to find a matching pair. Then you need to put them on. And then you need to put on your sneakers. But once you have them on, they transform your outfit. My faves are all white, though I do have my Chuck Taylor's on call as well. Wear your sneakers with a skirt or a dress, and instead of being TOO put-together, you are irreverent in the best possible way.

4. Flares. Fear not my skinny-jeans loving friends! Just cause flares are coming back does not mean that you need to throw your skinnies away. But it's nice to have a little diversity in your wardrobe. Cropped flares are big, and seriously adorable when worn the right way. And as a bonus, if you are a little heavier on the bottom, flares paired with a platform shoe or heel instantly elongate your legs and make you look thinner than wearing skinny jeans and a high heel. 5. Joy. How can you buy this? Where do you get this? What size should you get? You can't. It's in your heart. Extra Large. I read this book by Marie Kondo called “The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up.” And it changed my life! Or at least the way I shop for clothes. I know you've heard all those crazy tricks for getting rid of clothes you don't wear anymore. But you still end up with a bunch of clothes that you need to get rid of year after year. Marie's trick for having a closet full of clothes that you love is to take everything out of your closet, and instead of assessing which clothes you want to discard, choose instead the clothes that elicit joy in your heart, and are therefore worthy of being kept. GAME CHANGER! I used to buy clothes because they were on sale. Seeing a $3 clearance price tag elicits joy, but the actual piece of clothing it was attached to didn't. But I bought it anyway. I still hang out in the clearance racks, because that's my fave. But more often than not, I walk away empty handed, or with only 1 or 2 new things that I love instead of 3-5 things that aren't going to last in my closet in the long run.

I hope you enjoyed today's post and that you found one or two new ways to spice up your closet! The point is to wear clothes you feel AMAZING, and confident, and comfortable in, and that always translates to you looking AMAZING. If you hate every trend I shared with you, do not try them! Cause that will not make you joyful. And people want to work with a joyful entrepreneur! I would love to hear about your favorite fashion accessory in the comment section of whichever social media platform you found me on!

Have a great and stylish Friday my friends!
